Effect of self glucose monitoring on glycemic control of patients with diabetes mellitus fasting during Ramadan

Aim: It is known that a significant number of patients with diabetes insist on fasting in the month Ramadan, despite advice their physicians and reliable authorities. In order to provide best possible care support these patients, International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Ramadan (DAR) Alliance practical guidelines have been created by Alliance. The aim this study was investigate effect consulting physician self glucose monitoring management during diabetes.Methods: With retrospective observational study, over 18 years age who were diagnosed diabetes, came outpatient clinic for control after made follow-up from our before included. Everyone intends fast (previous or not) has asked about previous experiences, questions whether they consulted doctor those fasted, how spent questionnaire filled. biochemical data analyzed.Results: A total 394 participated 98 them (24.9 %) fasted included study. mean 59.7 ± 12.3 and39.2 %werefemale. detected 86.7% people more than 15 days. Fasting rates higher males females (32.4% 20.8%) found 25.9% type 2 DM 10.3% 1 fasting. determined 62.8% intending subject, 55.3% risk 70% followed up selfmonitoring blood (SMBG). 23.4% (23/98) had reduction dose medications used; 5.1% (5/98) experienced complication would disrupt fasting; 16.3% gained weight (2.8 2.4 kg) 23.5% lost (2.7 1.9 kg). increase HbA1c decrease UACR detected. A1c follow SMBG better protected do not.Conclusion: it seen quarter fasted. most valuable result diabetic achieved successful providing self-auto mechanism SMBG, regardless not received medical consultationin Ramadan.
